Hogwarts....hurray!

At a time where Florida is facing the fear of a drastic economic decline due to the massive oil spill that is slowly encroaching on our beaches, a small but significant reprieve has opened it's doors to Orlando. Welcome, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, now open at Universal Studios Islands of Adventure.

Since it's soft opening a couple of weeks ago, thousands have flocked to Orlando to get a look at the "real life" version of JK Rowling's vision. Thank you, die hard Potter fans, for stimulating our economy and keeping Orlando and the surrounding areas afloat...at least for a little bit longer!

Check out what other's are saying about the opening day of the Wizarding World....

Interesting way of showing your lack of support for your President. I'll leave my political beliefs out of this, but I've gotta give it to a doctor who stands his ground. Guess all the Obama supporters need to take their urinary tract problems somewhere else!

Naked man runs from apartment fire after argument during sex...

Naked Man Runs From Apartment Fire

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. -- An argument over sex may have caused a Seminole County man to burn down his home. Deputies think the flames were set by an angry, naked man seen running from the scene.

Investigators believe 22-year-old Ryan Burkhart followed through with a threat to set the apartment he shared with his girlfriend on fire. The flames were spotted at 2:30am Wednesday at the Sun Lake apartments near I-4 and Lake Emma Road in Lake Mary (see map). Burkhart was arrested, but not before he spent several hours naked and hiding from police.

Burkhart was charged with aggravated assault and possession of drug paraphernalia, but those charges could be upgraded to arson. Investigators say it all started with a fight over sex.

“She and her boyfriend were being intimate when an argument broke out. Initially, it was verbal. Then it turned physical,” Kim Cannady with the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office said.

Neighbors heard the fight and called 911. Eyewitnesses said they saw the naked man chasing her out of the apartment, yelling he would set it on fire. However, when deputies arrived, he was gone.

The whole building had to be evacuated and neighbors were forced outside.

"Really? Is this happening right now? I mean, who sets a fire in their apartment?" neighbor James Crumpkilgron rhetorically questioned.

Firefighters knocked out the flames in 20 minutes, but it when it was all over Burkhart's apartment was gutted and another was damaged by smoke.

Burkhart had been hiding nearby and finally turned himself in, four hours later. He ended up in the back of a patrol car wearing only a pair of shorts and pair of handcuffs. He is now facing serious charges over a bad decision made in the heat of the moment.

“If an arson is initiated as the result of a felony, which our suspect is, he could incur the charges of arson, whether it was accidental or on purpose,” Cannady said.

Burkhart was interviewed Wednesday by the State Fire Marshal's Office. The charges against him could be upgraded to arson once its investigation is complete.

I feel that this post needs no explanation. I mean, isn't it almost every day that you get into a knock down, drag out, fight in mid-intercourse and feel the need to burn your apartment down, prior to even getting dressed?

A motorcyclist died Monday night after colliding with a black bear that ran into his path in Marion County, troopers said.

Ronald R. Stanley, 51, of Fruitland Park, was pronounced dead at Waterman Hospital following the crash, which occurred at about 9:10 p.m. on county Road 42 near Southeast 284 Terrace, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Stanley was driving a 2007 Harley Davidson westbound on county Road 42 when the bear ran into his path, troopers said. The front end of the motorcycle hit the left side of the bear, causing the bike to overturn, troopers said.

Stanley, who was not wearing a helmet, was taken to Waterman Hospital in critical condition and was pronounced dead at 11:05 p.m., according to the FHP.

Troopers said that Stanley's wife was following behind him when the crash occurred.

It's not known what happened to the bear.

It's officially bike week...usually the tragic death toll is riddled with car vs motorcycle news stories. But not this week. This week, a black bear causes a motorcyclists death. In Fruitland Park. Really?

Welcome to the Blog!

I have lived my entire life in Florida. Born in the land of sun and sand, I call Daytona Beach my home. I prefer to be barefoot and should probably own stock in the Reef sandal company. I'm the proverbial surfer girl.

Currently residing in Orlando with my husband and three furry children, I am a marketing professor at Full Sail University. While the beach is not at my backdoor, I appease the need for saltwater by driving less than an hour to my hometown. I miss the shore, but visit it as often as possible. The sound of the waves, the tingle of the sun, and the taste of the salt can always calm my soul.

Being that I've spent my entire life in Florida, I'm pretty familiar with the every day news events. I've tracked the stories that cross our television airwaves, newspapers, and internet sites. And after years of analysis, I'm confident in staying that everything, and I mean everything, happens in Florida.

Let me explain....

Take any news story as an example. It doesn't matter where it took pace, what happened, and when it happened...it is either directly or indirectly related to Florida. The person was originally from Florida, the plan started in Florida, the event happened in Florida, someone knew someone who was from Florida. I am 100% confident in the fact that Florida is at the heart of all things that seem to go wrong (and some right) with this country...and with this blog, I intend to prove just that.

Remember the ballot debacle during the Bush/Gore presidential race? The ballots in question were from Florida. The hijackers from September 11th? They went to school in Florida. The trainer recently killed by a killer whale at SeaWorld? Orlando, Florida.

Maybe it's something in the water or maybe some people have gotten too much sun...either way, Florida provides a hotbed of newsworthy events. So sit back, relax, and join me as I review life in the Sunshine State.
